Post – Blast Investigation
The objectives of the explosion scene investigation are no
different from those for a regular fire investigation: determine the origin of
the explosion, identify the fuel and ignition source, determine the cause and
establish the responsibility for the incident.
The
typical explosion incident can range from a small pipe bomb in a
dwelling(criminal) to a large explosion in a manufacturing plant (accidental).
Explosive and incendiary materials continue to be a favored tool of the
terrorist, organized crime and spite & revenge attacks. This is because of
the devastating accuracy of a bomb, whether the target is life, property or
both.
In addition, it is the general belief of bombers that little evidence is left
behind, that could assist law enforcement in their apprehension and detection.
This is a false conception.
In fact a well trained, Post-Blast investigator, will usually be able to
collect enough physical evidence at the scene to accurately determine the area
of origin and the cause. In the case of a criminal act, to determine the type
of explosive device used and exactly how it functioned.
