State Fire Marshal to Roll Out Volunteer Recruitment Effort

Calls need for volunteer firefighters critical

Who:         State Fire Marshal Robert R. Rielage

Chief Donald McConnaughy, Maumee Fire Department

What:        Status report on the state of Ohio’s volunteer firefighters and the announcement of the 1-800-FIRELINE recruitment effort, including the unveiling of three television public service announcements.

Where:      Maumee Fire Department

450 W. Dussel Dr., Maumee

When:       Thursday, December 19, 1999

                  11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Why:         More than two thirds of Ohio’s more than 1,200 fire departments are staffed by volunteer firefighters.  Increased demands on these departments for round-the-clock staffing is putting a strain on their ability to effectively provide fire safety services.

In response to the volunteer fire service’s concerns over the ability to adequately provide 24-hour protection, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has organized a statewide recruitment effort.  At the center of this effort is the partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council to provide 1-800-FIRELINE, a number that puts Ohioans interested in volunteering for the fire service in touch with local volunteer departments.

The State Fire Marshal has developed three, 30 second public service announcements for television to promote 1-800-FIRELINE.  Those videos will be shown and copies will be available for media that attend.
