DIRECTOR OF COMMERCE DONNA OWENS TO PROVIDE

PERSONAL FINANCE TIPS TO NORTHWEST CAREER CENTER STUDENTS

Wednesday's Presentation Is Part Of Department's Adopt-A-School Program

Donna Owens, director of the Ohio Department of Commerce, will present her "Investing For Your Future" program at the Northwest Career Center, the department's adopted school, on Wednesday, December 2 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The school is located at 2960 Cranston Drive, Dublin. The presentation will be made to the school's banking and accounting students.

In light of national reports highlighting the lack of financial knowledge of high school students, Director Owens is taking opportunities to speak with high school students about their financial futures and how they can wisely manage their money.

The "Investing For Your Future" program includes tips on managing credit cards, avoiding credit card debt, and renting. The Director will also give examples of how saving and investing can enhance the student's long term financial goals.

As Director of Commerce, Owens oversees one of the state's primary regulatory agencies. The Department regulates Ohio's state-chartered financial institutions as well as many industries involved in financial transactions such as real estate and securities. It also enforces the state's building and fire codes.

Beginning in January, the 32 banking and accounting students will be linked with department employees who will serve as the student's mentors. Over the past six years, approximately 150 students have been mentored by department employees and participated in various field trips. In addition, several employees are serving as tutors for students who are working towards completing the proficiency exam. Last year, department employees raised $8,500 for the Northwest Career Center.
