GOVERNOR VOINOVICH PROCLAIMS
MAY 4-10TH AS ARSON AWARENESS WEEK
Governor George V. Voinovich has proclaimed May 4-10, 1997 as "Arson Awareness Week" in the State of Ohio.
"Arson is a serious crime that threatens the safety of all Ohioans and can be reduced with active citizen participation," Governor Voinovich said. "Ohio's cities, communities, and neighborhoods are damaged each year by arson resulting in tax base erosion and employment loss."
Arson remains one of the nation's most devastating crimes in terms of financial and personal loss. In a typical year in the United States, more than 700 people are killed and almost two billion dollars worth of property is destroyed due to arson.
In Ohio, statistics over the last five years indicate that nearly 13,000 arson and suspected arson fires occur each year resulting in an average of 16 civilian deaths, 148 civilian injuries and more than $42 million in property loss.
"The arson threat can be combated through a concerted effort of Ohio's citizens, the Ohio fire service, law enforcement officials, and the insurance industry," Director of Commerce Donna Owens said. "This week should be used to heighten awareness about the damaging effects of arson."
Removing the threat of arson from homes and businesses is a top priority of the State Fire Marshal's office. To combat this serious crime, the Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of State Fire Marshal, and the Ohio fire service are working together through task forces and in many other ways. The State Fire Marshal's office trains hundreds of firefighters each year in arson investigation techniques. Their office provides the support Ohio fire departments need in order to serve their communities.
"Special recognition is due to the thousands of fire and law enforcement men and women, both volunteer and career, across the state," said Director Owens. "They exhibit remarkable dedication and professionalism in apprehending those guilty of the crime of arson in Ohio on a daily basis."
