FIRST LADY JANET VOINOVICH HIGHLIGHTS
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL BREAKFAST
First Lady of Ohio Janet Voinovich addressed a group of sixty mentors and students today during the Ohio Department of Commerce's mentor appreciation breakfast. The mentorship program at Commerce is the direct result of Mrs. Voinovich's "Adopt-a-School" initiative.
"The Adopt-A-School program is wonderful way to reach out to the children of Ohio," said First Lady Voinovich. "I am so pleased that the Ohio Department of Commerce has done such an exemplary job in mentoring students here in Columbus."
The Ohio "Adopt-A-School" Program encourages Ohio's businesses and service organizations to partner with their local schools to benefit student achievement. Over 4,000 partnerships exist throughout Ohio, including 35 state agencies, helping our school children toward a bright future through mentoring and tutoring programs.
The Department of Commerce began its Mentorship Program in 1993. It was a success from the beginning; and each year, the department receives a group of students from its "Adopt-A-School" partner, the Northwest Career Center located in Dublin.
"I am proud of our employees at Commerce for their valuable contributions to these students," said Director of Commerce Donna Owens. "With the First Lady's guidance, our program has continuing to grow with both our students and mentors walking away feeling gratified by the experience."
During the program, Director Owen's presented the school's principal with a check for $6000 on behalf of the employees of the Department of Commerce. The money was collected on a voluntary basis and was the most that the department has ever raised.
This year, thirty-eight employees volunteered to participate in the mentorship program working with thirty 11th grade students. Each Friday for the last sixteen weeks, the students spent two hours working with their assigned mentors.
In addition to learning about the Department of Commerce and other state agencies, the students spent time learning and assisting their mentors with their daily duties. Mentors also spent time with their students discussing the importance of continuing education, a strong work ethic, and provided both personal and professional guidance.
The students took tours of area businesses to include the Huntington National Bank and the Columbus Police Department. Staff from the Department of Commerce also conducted presentations like "Managing Your Money," "Maintaining Good Credit History," and "Saving for Retirement."
