OHIO STUDENTS LEARN VALUABLE MONEY MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Saving and Investing Education Month is officially in the bank.

During Ohio’s observance of Saving and Investing Education Month in April, staff members from the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Securities traveled throughout the state to share tips on saving and investing.

Seventeen staff members made 82 personal finance presentations in April before nearly 1,950 students and teachers.   In addition, 15 more presentations will be made in May before more than 250 students and teachers.    In total, the Division will make 97 presentations before approximately 2,200 people.

“Ohio’s students need to be prepared to make financial decisions as informed and wise consumers,” said Director of Commerce Gary C. Suhadolnik.  “I salute the Division of Securities staff members who traveled far and wide to help Ohio’s students learn how to manage credit cards wisely, understand the power of compound interest, and recognize the risks and rewards of investing.”

The presentations followed the recent release of a study titled “America’s Money Skills Report Card”, conducted on behalf of Americans for Consumer Education and Competition (ACEC).  The study found that young Americans have limited understanding of financial issues and how they can prepare for their financial futures.

Susan Molinari, ACEC national chairperson, said that the study demonstrates that teaching children personal money skills today can help determine whether they pass or fail life’s financial tests tomorrow.

In addition to the presentations during Saving and Investing Education Month, the Division of Securities has been working with the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Council on Economic Education in distributing the “Basics of Saving & Investing:  A Teaching Guide”.  Since 1999, the Division has distributed more than 1,900 teaching guides to Ohio educators.

The new teaching guide was developed by the Investor Protection Trust, the North American Securities Administrators Association (of which the Division of Securities is a member), and the National Association of Securities Dealers in conjunction with Eastern Michigan University.  The teaching guide is part of the Financial Literacy 2001 project.

The teaching guide can be used as the framework of a short course or as a supplement to an existing course in mathematics, home economics, business education, economics, or personal finance.  The teaching guides provide information about:

• designing a personal financial plan

• how financial markets work

• selecting among various savings and investment options

• finding and using investment information

• recognizing and protecting against investment fraud

The teaching guide is available to Ohio educators and can be requested by calling the Division of Securities at 800-788-1194.
