STATE FIRE MARSHAL HOLDS 100th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Ohio has the Oldest Continuous Fire Marshals Office in the Nation
State Fire Marshal Robert R. Rielage office celebrated its 100 years of history serving Ohio today.
"Todays event provided a worthwhile, educational and memorable experience for those in attendance," said Marshal Rielage. "In addition to celebrating our 100th Anniversary, we also paid tribute to firefighters throughout the state, including those who have given their lives protecting their fellow citizens."
The festivities included demonstrations, interactive stations, static displays and other activities. The Fire Marshals arson dogs performed a demonstration of their extraordinary detection abilities, and there was a bomb squad and robot demonstration as well. There were interactive programs designed specifically for children including a "search and rescue" maze, a "crawl under smoke" exercise, a 911 simulator, a "know two ways out" lesson, fire clowns and a fire safety puppet show. Children were also able to have their pictures taken in miniature firefighting turnout gear.
Fire apparatus, both modern and antique, from around the state were featured. Photos, clippings and an archive history were highlighted among other static displays including 1-800 FIRELINE (volunteer firefighter recruitment) information and an information booth on each Fire Marshal Bureau (investigations, code enforcement, fire prevention, forensics laboratory and the bureau of underground storage tank regulation).
"Firefighting is a noble and proud profession," said Director of Commerce Gary C. Suhadolnik, whose department houses the State Fire Marshals office. "For 100 years, the State Fire Marshals office has been a valuable member of that tradition here in Ohio, serving both the fire service and the citizens of our state."
The official centennial ceremony honored the four living former State Fire Marshals: James McNamee (1991-1999), William Hennosy (1984-1991), David Lucht (1974-1975) and James Caldwell (1973-1974).
The tribute also included a bagpipe salute and "last alarm" honoring those firefighters who have paid the supreme sacrifice.
