Gary L. Schaeffer began serving as Superintendent of the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Industrial Compliance on Monday, March 5, 2007.
As Superintendent of Industrial Compliance, Mr. Schaeffer directs the division responsible for reviewing and approving the building plans for the construction and renovation of commercial and public building projects; inspections on boilers and elevators, and the licensing of trades, such as boiler operators. The Division operates through two bureaus: Building Code Compliance and Operations and Maintenance. It also houses the Board of Building Appeals (BBA), Board of Building Standards (BBS), Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB), Ski Tramway Board and the Historical Boiler Licensing Board.
Immediately prior to his appointment, Gary Schaeffer had been President of Construction Services Industry since August 2004 and had also served as the Member at Large for OCILB. Before that, he served as Secretary Treasurer of the Ohio State Building Trades from August 1997 through August 2004. He was also employed as Business Representative for Plumbing and Pipefitting Local #219 in Akron, Ohio from May 1982 until August 1997. Gary began his apprenticeship as a pipefitter and welder in 1968 and received his certification in May 1973. He attended the University of Akron and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Union Leadership and Administration from the George Meany National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland.
He and his wife Pam currently reside in Powell, Ohio.
