Ohio Fire Academy Burn Building

The Ohio Fire Academy Burn Building was dedicated on May 15, 2002 at the Academy grounds in Reynoldsburg.  The $1.8-million facility was designed by the OFA staff, who toured other facilities to gather the "best of the best" ideas.  The Burn building can be used for aerial ladder operations, confined space training, rescue training, search and rescue and firefighter self-rescue.  Each level of the three-story building is designed to simulate real situations, from a residential setting that utilizes propane props, to a commercial setting that incorporates restrooms, office space and an elevator.  The facility is available to about 500 firefighters each year.

Training Tower/Search and Rescue Building

The four-story training tower is used for a variety of programs:  ladder raises and carries, rope rescue, search and rescue and other fireground and hose evolutions.  With both interior and exterior stairs, an elevator and an operating sprinkler / standpipe system, the training tower can be utilized for a variety of training situations.  Attached to the tower is the search and rescue area.  An inside maze can be used to teach rescue technique in total darkness.  A roof simulator allows students to practice

cutting ventilation holes with both power saws and axes.

Apparatus Building

Our Apparatus Building houses all the equipment for the Academy.  Our trucks are used for training only, so multiple operations can be going on at one time.  The Apparatus Building is also home to our Major Incident Response Vehicle (MIRV) that can be used for major incident, terrorism or investigative response, as well as a center for incident command.

OFA Classrooms/Instructor Offices

The training and education efforts of the Academy focus on meeting the needs of the fire service personnel, both career and volunteer, with consideration given to upgrading and enhancing the knowledge and skills of allied professionals.  The OFA's programs are intended to supplement and complement regional and local fire training efforts and needs.  Courses can also be extended comprehensive programs a variety of factors relating to a general area.

Mobile Fire Behavior Labs

The Ohio Fire Academy has two Mobile Fire Behavior Labs that travel across the state to provide demonstrations and training.  The Mobile Labs create pre-flashover conditions.  Our instructors can demonstrate different phases of a fire, from inception to flashover.  They can teach firefighters how to recognize and prevent flashover within a safely controlled environment.  Our Mobile Fire Behavior Lab is one of the most useful tools we can offer to give firefighters a realistic idea of the way fires behave.

Farm Rescue

Pond

A ten-acre pond provides Academy students and fire departments with an opportunity to train in basic water rescue, ice rescue, drafting, pump operations and pump testing.
