SAVING AND INVESTING EDUCATION MONTH TO HIGHLIGHT

IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Governor Bob Taft has proclaimed April as Saving and Investing Education Month in Ohio.  This observance month, which is part of an international investor education campaign, is designed to encourage consumers to save, invest wisely, and protect themselves against fraud.

This year’s campaign is focusing on four themes:

n      financial education of young people

n      what investors need to know

n      saving and investing for retirement

n      awareness of internet fraud

Throughout Saving and Investing Education Month, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Securities will be addressing these topics and providing valuable information to Ohioans.  In addition, Division of Securities staff members are scheduled to make more than 90 presentations at elementary, middle and high schools throughout the state.

“With the uncertainty in today’s financial markets, it is more important than ever that Ohioans understand the basics of savings and investing,” said Ohio Securities Commissioner Debbie Dye Joyce.  “We need to understand the importance of saving and investing and only consider those saving and investing products that meet our goals and risk tolerance.”

To protect themselves, prospective investors should “investigate before they invest.”  One of the first things a prospective investor should do is learn if the brokerage and salesperson is licensed and if the security is properly registered, Commissioner Dye

Joyce said.

The Division of Securities Investor Protection Hotline (800-788-1194) gives Ohioans the opportunity to check if their securities salesperson and brokerage firm are licensed to sell securities in Ohio and if there are any disciplinary records against them.  Another feature of the hotline permits prospective investors to check on whether a security is properly registered with the state of Ohio.  Also, individuals who believe they are victims of securities fraud can also request a complaint form by calling the hotline.

In addition, investor education materials can be requested through the hotline or downloaded through the Division’s web site at www.securities.state.oh.us

Note to editors:  The Ohio Department of Commerce will issue news releases every Monday during April to address specific saving and investing topics.  If this schedule does not meet your needs, please contact us.
