(Columbus) – Elementary school students from Wooster, Broadview Heights and Salem claimed the top prizes in the 10th Annual U.S. Savings Bonds Poster Contest. The three winners were selected from posters entered by Ohio students in the 4th through 6th grades. The winning posters illustrate the contest’s 2001 theme: "Reach for the Stars – Buy U.S. Savings Bonds."
In a ceremony held yesterday at the Vern Riffe Center in Columbus, Katie Cantrell, a 6th grader from Wooster Township Elementary, Wooster, OH, received a $1,000 savings bond for her first place poster. Sixth grader Janelle Zogbi, from Brecksville-Broadview Heights Middle School, in Broadview Heights, OH, received a $500 U.S. Savings Bond for the winning second place poster. Hollyann Popp, a home-schooled 5th grader from Salem, OH, received a $200 savings bond for her third place poster. The savings bonds were presented by Douglas V. Wyatt, Regional Chairman of Central Ohio, Firstar Bank.
"The posters created by Katie, Janelle and Hollyann cleverly illustrated the importance of saving for the future," said Gary C. Suhadolnik, Director of the Ohio Department of Commerce. The department administers the poster contest in Ohio.
Forty-eight participating Ohio schools sent in their top posters for consideration. Overall, 1,508 students participated in this year’s contest. Of the 168 posters submitted, the top 25 were selected as semi-finalists. Judges selected the top three posters from these. The panel of judges included: Ron Kelley, Ohio Historical Society; Debra Knapp, ONN-TV; Doug Norman, Columbus College of Art and Design; Cindy Lindahl, Firstar Bank; and Cheryl Lyman, Ohio Department of Commerce.
Ms. Cantrell’s first place winning poster will represent Ohio in the national competition in Washington, D.C. The first place winner of the national contest, to be announced in May 2001, will receive $5,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds; the second place winner $2,000 in savings bonds; and the third place winner $1,000 in savings bonds. The winners will be flown to Washington, D.C. to receive their awards.
In addition to Firstar Bank and the Ohio Department of Commerce, other sponsors of the Ohio Poster Contest include Bob Evans Farms and the Ohio Historical Society. United Space Alliance is the national sponsor of the 2001 contest.
